Budapest surroundings hide some real architectural gems. If you follow the course of the Danube towards north from the Hungarian capital city, you can reach the panoramic bay of the river which, back in the past, was known as the Roman limes. Today it is possible to reach the characteristic cities scattered along the Danube river by train, ferry and bike, especially during summer months.

Among the most beautiful cities there are Szentendre, which is one of the most touristic destinations, Visegrad, an ancient medieval town, Esztergom, the ancient capital of Hungary, and Godollo, which is famous for its medieval castle.

South from Budapest there is the Great Hungarian Plain, which offers various parks inhabited by protected species. When the Danube breaks down it shapes Csepel Island, which was very popular among Hungarian princes.

In the western side of Budapest there are various medieval towns built by the German colonists after the wars against the Turks, which make up the famous Via Imperialis connecting Esztergom, where the Royal Palace was located, to Szekesfehervar, where many Hungarian kings were crown.

Mountain bike and hiking lovers can reach the hills following the paths marked around Pilis, as well as the Visegrad and Borzsony mountains. Speleology and climbing lovers can reach the Oszoly rocky wall of Csobanka. Along the Danube, in Soroksar, Szentendre, God and Esztergom it is possible to practice all kinds of water sports such as canoa, water skiing, or driving a jet ski.

Engine lovers will enjoy the numerous structures located near the Formula One circuit of Mogyorod, such as the Hungarokart Center and the Xtreme Quad Park. At the Budakeszi-Farkashegy, Budaors, Dunakeszi, Gbdolld and Esztergom airports it is possible to practice the following activities: glinding, powered flight, hang-glider, and hot-air baloon.

Around Budapest there are several hunting areas. Around the mountains it is possible to find deers, roe deers, mouflons, and wild boars, while around the plain there are pheasant, hares, and wild ducks.

Hungarians are strongly passionated about stables and equitation, and around all these villages it is possible to practice these activities. Golf is getting more and more popular in Budapest thanks to the presence of various golf camps and clubs.

On winter time it is possible to ski around Visegrad.
